Common Miracle
This is a mirror I made after reading a fabulous poem called "Miracle Fair" by Wislawa Szymborska. A few of my favorite stanzas:
"The Commonplace miracle;
that so many common miracles take place.
The usual miracle:
invisible dogs barking
in the dead of night.
Several miracles in one:
an alder is reflected in the water
and is reversed from left to right
and grows from crown to root
and never hits bottom
though the water isn't deep.
An extra miracle, extra and ordinary:
the unthinkable
can be thought."
This poem puts me in such a grateful and wide-eyed state of mind, and I tried to translate that feeling into this piece.
It measures 10 x 10" and is a mixed-media mosaic on a sealed wooden base.
I made the purple polymer clay tiles and then combined them with tempered glass over a painting that includes the text of the poem. I never intended for the words to be legible (you have to really look to see them). I just wanted them there.
